Hotspots at Car Rental Companies admin It�s Monday morning, you�ve been incognito for over 3 hours as the plane finally lands, taxis to the gate and opens its doors. You and 120 other passengers begin the scramble for ground transportation. Out of the plane the race continues! Wouldn�t it be nice to check your e-mail to find out what happened on Friday afternoon and Monday morning? Airport arrival areas are setup to get people out of the airport quickly and efficiently. In general, there are no areas to sit down and have a coffee. Most often there is no hotspot infrastructure for people leaving the airport. Car hire companies have identified their departure lobbies as potential hotspots and the customers love it. In the US the two largest chains Avis and Hertz have begun rollout of hotspots at their major airports. Hertz will provide their service in conjunction with Wayport and Avis has recently signed a deal with SBC to supply 88 of its locations. Hertz will furthermore integrate all Wayport hotspot locations directly into the Hertz GPS neverlost system, so that travelling users can click on Wayport in GPS and will be guided directly to the next hotspot location. Excellent idea and it is of course time for European WISPs to get on the bandwagon. Since car hire companies often have a separate location than the airport itself, it is also a great opportunity for independent WISP s wanting to offer service at an airport where otherwise the airport authority has restrictive monopoly on frequency and service provisioning.
