Starting January 15, the Frankfurt-Washington flight of the German Airline Lufthansa is taking off with WLAN on board.
The Boeing 747-400 has been equipped with a system developed and operated by Connexion by Boeing. The plane is equipped with a receiving and transmitting antenna which constantly adjusts its position to point towards satellites providing Internet access for all passengers carrying a Wi-Fi enabled Laptop or PDA with a maximum connection speed of 5Mbits. The service will be tested for 3 months on the Frankfurt-Washington line (pricing information available on plane) and will be extended to cover more Lufthansa flights with the official launch in early 2004, with a pricing model which has not yet been communicated.
British Airways, Japan Airlines (JAL) and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) have also announced to offer the Connexion service on their flights.
